Anna completed her BSc in Natural Sciences at the University of Durham. After graduating she moved to Rotterdam to work for one of the world’s largest oil companies. She moved back to Germany to work in the refining sector. In 2006 Anna moved to Calgary and joined Blackstone Energy Solutions which focuses on solar, geothermal and energy efficient design and installation in Western Canada.

Colin is a Technology Specialist in the Residential Product Development department of ENMAX Corporation whose mandate is to bring alternative energy technologies to Albertans. When Colin is not at work, he is leading by example by building a net-zero energy home near Okotoks. His home will use a fraction of the energy of a typical home and will produce its own heat and electricity onsite.

Gary Fredrich-Dunne is Bullfrog Power‘s Sales and Marketing Manager in Alberta. Prior to joining Bullfrog Power in 2008, Gary spent over 12 years with EMI Music Canada in a variety of key roles involving business development, marketing and communications, event management, promotions and product development. At Bullfrog Power, Gary is responsible for corporate business development and marketing. Gary received a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Calgary.
Gary’s topic: Your Mother was Right – Electricity and Water Shouldn’t Mix
Roger has been a member of CAUSE (Citizens Advocating use of Sustainable Energy) for four years. Inspired by the “Greening the Grid” report by Pembina Institute, he has been influential in the municipalities campaign which saw twelve cities and towns write to the Provincial Government advocating for renewable power and in CAUSE bringing Hunter Lovins to Calgary last fall. He has presented to the Alternative Energy Meetup group, the 2009 EcoLiving Fair and the Economic Development Committee of Black Diamond.
Roger’s topic: Opportunities in Alberta’s Renewable Energy Landscape
Susana is currently writing her Master’s Thesis on thermal comfort and energy use with radiant heating technologies through the Faculty of Environmental Design at the University of Calgary. She is also an MITACS intern in water supply issues in First Nation Communities with the firm OASIS Filter International Ltd. She holds a M. Arch from the Polytechnic University of Madrid (Spain) where she comes from. She has almost ten years of experience in consultancy in energy efficiency and renewable energy in buildings.

Tyler is a longtime certified Energy Advisor and instructor for R2000 and Built Green builder training programs. He now also serves as a faculty member and Green Rater for the LEED Canada for Homes system, operated by the Canada Green Building Council. He owns and operates 4 Elements Integrated Design Ltd. providing environmental residential design and consulting services.

Tom is the president of Simple Solar Heating Ltd. Following 25 years in manufacturing businesses Mr Jackman ‘went green’ with Simple Solar Heating. Simple Solar’s ‘Freedom Won’ solar heaters are off-grid requiring no external energy source to operate and are fully automatic. Mr. Jackman has filed two patents relating to solar heating and provides innovative solutions to solar projects. He is a certified solar thermal installer; a member of the Canadian Solar Industries Association, the Net Zero Home Coalition, and Built-Green Alberta. He is also chairman of the Friends of Fish Creek Provincial Park.

Curt started in construction while in college and has built his career first as a renovator, then as a builder in new home construction. 5 years ago, Curt and his brother-in-law Kevin started Beyond Foam Insulation. They started this company because they saw the benefits of foam and made it their goal to educate clients and build a strong business.

Darryl Kaminski
Since his graduation as an Electrical Engineering Technologist from this very campus, Darryl has worked on a wide variety of fascinating projects regarding the conservation and clean generation of electricity. He has worked with the Pembina Institute, Stantec consulting, Sustainable Energy Technology and now, as a consultant through his own company, Think Energy Inc. His twin passions are renewable energy and electric vehicles.
Darryl’s topic: The Future of Energy: Community and Collaboration
Tracey Loston is a passionate advocate for a better built environment. She has worked approximately 15 years in the industry with various architectural firms in Calgary, Toronto and Ottawa. LEED Accredited since 2004, she has coordinated numerous LEED projects in Calgary most notably the Calgary Courts Centre and South Health Campus. Tracey serves on the Materials Technical Advisory Group and Higher Education Committee with the Canada Green Building Council. Her passion to promote sustainable buildings is further enhanced in her role as an instructor at SAIT Polytechnic teaching LEED and Architectural Technologies courses. Tracey joined the International Living Futures Institute to take the green building conversation to the next level.

Anand Mishra manages research projects and makes it available to stakeholders. Mr. Mishra worked as a Civil Engineer in Thailand, Singapore and India. Mr. Mishra has been involved in the development of North American Building Codes and Standards and Occupational Regulations related to indoor air quality, ventilation and thermal comfort. Mr. Mishra has been involved with initiatives like Built Green Alberta, Canada Green Building Council and CMHC’s EQuilibrium Homes and Communities.
Anand’s topic: Equilibrium/ Net Zero Homes monitoring results – what worked & what didn’t
Zaak has lived in Calgary, Montreal, Lacombe, Halifax, Edmonton, Grand-Sault NB, Marshall Islands and Guatemala giving him the opportunity to live in many different contexts and cultures. Favouring adventure, he has cycled across Canada, canoed the Mackenzie River, and is a father to two children. He is currently involved with Dragonfly Cohousing, a cohousing project in development in Calgary.

Kerry is the Director of Green T Design, a company dedicated to green roof design, installations and maintenance. She co-founded the Alberta Ecorooof Initiative in 2004, Alberta’s first demonstration and research site. Trainied as an architect, she is an accredited Green Roof Professional and is involved in green roof projects large and small.
Kerry’s topic: Greening Rooftops in Alberta – recent projects
Lindsay is co-owner of local brick-and-mortar store Babes in Arms, which specializes in babywearing and cloth diapering. She cloth diapered her own daughter and has helped Calgary families find their own best cloth diapering options since 2007. Ms. Ross also wrote a “Going Green” column for local magazine New Home Living for three years.

David Silburn, M.Arch, is an intern architect and Research Associate in Applied Research and Innovation Services. He developed the GBT initiative in 2008, and has taught and developed course & program curricula for Energy and Construction programs and Built Green Canada. In 2009 the GBT Lab was awarded a 5 year, $2.3 M NSERC CCI grant. David acts as designer, construction manager and technical consultant for the Discovery series Net Zero homes while working with multiple industry partners to design, fabricate and introduce building integrated renewable technologies and advanced envelope assemblies into the market.

Dr. Swann is the MLA of Calgary Mountain View. In 2002, he was president of the Alberta Society of Medical Officers which passed a resolution calling for action on climate change. Dr. Swann was fired. He was offered his job back but declined. In 2004 he chose a political career.

Brian spent most of his career as a mechanical engineer working on various ways of making electricity from hydro, coal, natural gas and nuclear (in various sizes from 10 watts to 1,000 watts) but began shifting towards solar about 25 years ago. Brian built his own energy efficient home 30 years ago.

David Vonesch, partner at SkyFire Energy Inc, has been in the solar industry since 2007. David has an engineering degree from the University of Alberta, and is a CanSIA/Seneca College Certified Photovoltaic Technician. SkyFire Energy has installed hundreds of solar thermal, photovoltaic and wind energy systems throughout Alberta, BC, NWT, and Ontario. SkyFire Energy just completed the largest PV installation outside of Ontario with a 260 kW system on the Penticton campus of Okanagan College.

Ken and his wife Pam are co-owners of Bow Point Nursery. The nursery was started at its present site in 1988. Ken has been actively researching the propogation and culture of the trees and shrubs in Southern Alberta for the last 25 years. Ken and Pam have successfully built an environmentally sustainable business growing plants for the Calgary region.
