Vanessa Farquharson

National Post Journalist and Eco Blogger

It wasn’t easy to transition from a product junkie with a love for halogens into a green-conscious young woman who came to love the eco-friendly lifestyle, but Vanessa Farquharson did it, chronicling her experiences on her much-talked-about blog. Her strategy was to make one green-friendly change to her life every day, for an entire year, in hopes that 366 baby steps would add up to something more significant — and it did. Today, this young writer continues to inspire those who feel helpless, doubtful or cynical when it comes to adopting a green lifestyle through her self-deprecating humour and approachable nature.

Farquharson is a journalist with the National Post and the author of Sleeping Naked is Green: How an eco-cynic unplugged her fridge, sold her car, and found love in 366 days. In a review, Publishers Weekly raved that “Farquharson’s appealing candor and nonsanctimonious attitude make other ecowarriors seem dour by comparison.” The New Yorker‘s Elizabeth Kolbert provided a more backhanded compliment: “At twenty-eight, Farquharson is almost exactly the age that Thoreau was when he set off for Walden Pond. And she’s a lot like him, too, if he’d been the type who enjoys blowing a ‘month’s savings on a bottle of pink Veuve Clicquot and pairing it with back-to-back reruns of America’s Next Top Model.’” Guilty as charged.
