Trail Blazers: David Vonesch

How did you get started in this industry and when did you first become interested in sustainability?

My interest in sustainability stems from many things – a rural upbringing, my engineering degree at the University of Alberta, and my many summers spent planting trees in northern Alberta are all contributing influences. Interestingly enough, it was by volunteering at the 2007 Ecoliving Fair that jumpstarted my career in the solar industry. I was able to network with some of the exhibitors at the show and eventually got hired on with what is now SkyFire Energy.

What are your thoughts on sustainable developments and clean energy within Calgary and surrounding areas?

Although the clean energy industry is still relatively small in Calgary, there is lots of passion and enthusiasm behind it. Demand for these products is only increasing – it is a high growth industry and an exciting one to be a part of.

What piece of advice you would offer?

Get involved! Attend or volunteer at Ecoliving’s annual fair, network at Green Drinks or Renewable Energy Meetup, or take some classes on sustainable building or renewable energy.
